Getting Started

Kevin and Gail Shaw established Hound Dog Hops in 2017. The hop yard started with a dozen old fence rails, a few hundred feet of baler twine and two hundred plants.

The poles were locally sourced from a  lumber yard and cable was strung at 18' high. In the fall of 2017, the young plants were transplanted to their permanent location. The field was planted in the spring of April 2018 with more Cascade and Centennial, Chinook, Saaz, Sorachi Ace, Triple Pearl and Willamette.

Alberta grown hops are a recent addition to the provincial economy. As such, there is much to learn, many breakthroughs and some headaches involved in bringing this new crop to market. Our team is enjoying the journey.
